Teacher, physicist, ecologist, Mario has won many awards for his poetry, including the Arts Council’s Writers Award, the prestigious Bridport Prize and the Daily Telegraph / Arvon International Poetry Competition.  He is the Imperial War Museum‚s first (and only) poet in residence.  From 2000 onwards he has held Fellowships at Oxford Brookes University supported by the Royal Literary Fund and has just been commissioned as Radio 3’s inaugural poet in residence.

Mario’s debut collection of poems, 'Shrapnel and Sheets', won a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.  It shows his remarkable sensitivity to pressing issues in society and the self, particularly around science, family and war.  'Heavy Water' is a book-length poem published by Enitharmon in April 2004 to mark the 18th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster (www.enitharmon.co.uk).  This poem is described by the Daily Telegraph as "Heartfelt, ambitious and alive".  It continues and deepens Mario's project to deploy poetry so as to explore and engage scientific and spiritual concerns without becoming sentimental, naive or arcane.
