Born in London to Russian and Armenian parents,  I have worked in a variety of jobs at home and abroad.    I have written four novels, three under the name of RUKSHANA SMITH, entitled SUMITRA'S STORY, RAINBOWS OF THE GUTTER, and SALT ON THE SNOW

For my fourth book, THE POET WHO SOLD TIME*,  I shortened  my author name to RAQI SMITH.

I am using the name JANNA ELIOT.

I have translated Aad Wagenaar's SETTELA  from the Dutch.  I write book reviews specialising in Romani matters, and am interested in following up my Romani heritage.  I write short stories too, and have always written poems, a few of which have been published in sorrowful volumes.

At present I work for the British Council as a Creative Writing Mentor.   I am passionately interested in folk music, play several instruments, sing in a Bulgarian choir and dance wherever and whenever I can.
