Our children shiver in the gaps we leave
As we hasten through their city:
covered spaces in spaghetti junction walkways,
interstices among illusions we construct,
that they will live without.
Durban kids, deprived of homes, lead by example:
solidarity, pragmatism, inventiveness;
rejected by ours, they forge their own community,
smile before they die, stretch out an olive branch
toward our turn-off from the low road to extinction.
