My Two Halves

Luck gives and life takes away
And in the process
We break, crumble, and divide
I am the keeper of two halves
They speak different tongues
Enjoy different tastes
Dream different dreams

Side by side
Estranged by the indiscernible
Together, yet far apart
Constantly at war

I am the keeper of the glass wall
I can become either
And understand both
From where I stand they are but one

My job is to keep them in line
Make sure they remain true, loyal, and pure
That they don't mix languages
That they are authentic
At night, the wall is invisible
And I imagine my two halves united
Ah, if only, if ever
If the two could be one
I could combine their voices, create new words
And let their dreams flow
But there are two halves
And all I can do
Is guard their safety
