Peaceful Departure

If God loves me
I'll die in my sleep:
an on-time departure with no baggage
no tragedy, no agony, no good-byes
I won't have to change clothes before leaving
no shoes
no hat
I'll be clean and my teeth brushed
not a trace of mascara
I'll be pure as the day I arrived.

If God loves me
I won't know what time it is.
Roaming in a magical dreamland
                                                      the dream will go on
till eternity.

nothing will stir my conscience
no reminder of the sick, the poor, the forgotten
no unfinished business
nothing to take along
or to leave behind.
In sleep, there is no expectation
no disappointment,
no regret.

If God loves me
He will offer solace when I'm gone
He will remind my children
that I left with no pain
and that I departed in my favorite clothes
with a dream in my head
and a smile on my face.
